It is said that dancing is one of the closest things to magic and Amrutvahini College of Engineering believes in the same, which is why this year, we bring to you the best of magic at MEDHA 2019 that is to be held on 17, 18 and 19 January 2019.

Once again, AVCOE will be hosting the most awaited cultural fest of the year - MEDHA 2019. What’s more? This year, we are also bringing to you the biggest dance competition where students from all over Maharashtra can participate and win cash prizes up to ₹ 61,000!



The dance competition will be held in two groups -

A) Junior Group - where students between the age group of 10 to 16 years can participate.

The winner in the small group wins ₹ 7,000, the Medha cup and certificates, with the second and third position winners getting ₹ 5,000 and ₹ 3, 000 respectively, with a minimal entry fee of Rs.300/- per group.

B) Senior Group - where students of age 17 years and above can participate.

The winner in the open group wins ₹ 11,000, the Medha cup and certificates, with the second and third position winners getting ₹ 7,000 and ₹ 5, 000 respectively, with a minimal entry fee of Rs.500/- per group.

Every group that wants to participate can have 6 to 16 members and can perform up to 5 minutes.

  2. The trial of the final event will be held on January 11, 2019.

Let’s agree to the fact that in India, we have a situation with ‘engineering’. It could either be a “Boon or bane” which means, it could turn out to be beneficial or harmful (in some cases).

It’s all good when you get the benefits out of something, in which you’ve had spent a lot of your time! But what’s not going right with those who can’t make situations any better.

When we normally talk about engineering, we prioritize the need to have a decent job. Which is not wrong really, but it is when your only aim is to be a certified candidate to of an esteemed organization.

Where is the creativity?

The creativity gets left out when your behavior is too predictable and structured. Think of someone great like Charles Babbage for instance. Babbage developed plans for the analytical engine, the forerunner of the modern digital computer. Thomas Edison

Edison has also invented a number of other things like the motion picture camera, stock ticker, and battery for the electric car, a mechanical vote recorder and the phonograph. He is Primarily known for inventing the light bulb. He was also among the first ones to practice mass production for his inventions, manufacturing on a large scale. He has around 1093 US patents on his name and many more outside the US. He was an excellent engineer.

Amar Gopal Bose

An electrical engineer and sound engineer, he was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for over 45 years. He was also the founder and chairman of Bose Corporation. In 2011, he donated a majority of the company to MIT in the form of non-voting shares to sustain and advance MIT's education and research mission.

While some view it as laziness, there might be other factors at play. In psychology, it has been long been believed that people who procrastinate have a faulty sense of time, that they think they will have more time to get something done than they actually do. Specifically, it seems that task aversion is to blame i.e. when people view a task in an unpleasant manner (tough, boring, or painful), they are more likely to put it off.
Sometimes people procrastinate because other options for how to spend their time are too tempting to pass up, or they think they can work better under pressure. People convince themselves that they’re waiting until crunch time because the product will be better. Other times, they procrastinate because they don’t know how to begin.

1. Put it in writing

Write down the tasks you’ve been avoiding. This will bring the project to the front of your mind so you can’t easily ignore it.

2. Neutralize negative thinking

When you think of this task, what negative thought pops into your head? Find an antidote to that thought in the form of a truth that contradicts it. Instead of thinking “I’ll never be able to learn all this,” you might say to yourself, “I can do this”.

3. Break it into parts

When a task seems overbearing, procrastination often follows. So how can you break that task into smaller, more manageable parts? Chunking it down will help you feel less overwhelmed and more empowered.

4. Stop giving excuses

Do any of these sound familiar? “I need to be in the mood.”, “I will wait until I have time.”, “I work better under pressure.” Be honest with yourself, these are excuses which will never allow you to start your work. Stop giving them and start working

5. Enjoy the victory

Finishing a daunting task is satisfying. Remind yourself that you’ll feel incredibly virtuous when the chore is off your plate once and for all. Accomplishing what you’re avoiding will simplify your work life. You’ll feel more energetic. You’ll sleep better at night. Relish the feeling of success.

We may haven’t come anywhere near Ivan Sutherland’s vision yet, and perhaps we don’t want to. But therecertainly are engaging virtual and augmented realities today.

VR makes it possible for users to immerse themselves in constructed surroundings that depict the actual places or imaginary worlds. AR overlays contextual information on the immediate physical environment users see before their eyes, thus blending digital components and experiences with real life.

What are benefits for us?

  1. Computer vision allows devices to extract information from real time images and the surrounding area. This, linked with GPS systems can help a device recognize your location, giving traffic directions, alternative routes, and even identifying hazards. It could even tell your car to activate the brakes, if it recognizes a motorbike indicator or a hand signal from a cyclist that you missed.
  2. Designing for AR and VR requires new enabling tools and services. High-definition 3D image capture and mapping equipment are emerging, accelerating developer’s abilities to recreate real world physical environments within new AR and VR tools. 
  3. Consumer-tech aside, within engineering, design and architectural companies, the power of these smart glasses is virtually endless. Through the use of digital eyeware, a wealth of information can be stored and linked to physical products in the building. When you look at a water pump, for example, the last service information and audit could pop up over the product, which can then be linked to the service manual and even a step-by-step guide to show how to dismantle and repair the elements.

So, what does the future hold for AR and VR in Engineering?

AR can allow an engineer or designer to design a product right in the environment it will go in, allowing them to be aware of space restrictions or other obstacles.

Ability to visualize a design that originates on the computer screen, as it is meant to appear in the real world, visual recognition and monitoring of various components, bug identification through comparison with known-working systems are just some of the way in which AR and VR could be useful. Could being the operative word, as is often the case with pushing the envelope of innovation, the true benefits are often not realized until the adoption curve has matured.

The Engineering Community across India celebrates Engineer’s Day on 15 September every year as a tribute to the greatest Engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli near Chikkaballapur. He went on to become India’s most prolific civil engineer, dam builder, economist, stateman, and can be counted among the last century’s foremost nation-builders.

At AVCOE, we celebrate Engineer’s Day as an appreciation of the engineering profession and in the memory of India’s eminent engineer, scholar and stateman Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

1. Field visits to historic engineering marvels
We have a great architectural and engineering heritage. There are quite a few expertly engineered monuments or buildings in India. This engineer’s day, you can take a trip to some of these design marvels. Some of the spectacular projects are Golden Globe in Auroville, Bandra-Worli Sea link, I-flex Solutions in Bangalore.

2. Organize a debate or quiz related to latest developments in engineering field
Boost your knowledge about the developments in technology and engineering field. Arrange a quiz on topics related to the same, or you can even conduct a debate on pros and cons of developing technology, or similar topics. 

3. Educate others
This Engineer’s Day, unite for a social cause. Visit a government or tribal schools and teach the kids there, simple yet interesting engineering concepts. You can also carry some interesting projects and demonstrate the working of the project to the kids.

1.  Cherish learning in success or failure.
Failures are not a surprise for engineers. What makes you stand out from others is the way you deal with it. Successful engineers see failure as an opportunity to try something new, to perform better.

2.  Don’t compare yourself to others.
Be your best at what you do and keep consistently being the best. The only one you should compare yourself is to who you are today and how can you better yourself for the future.

3.  Embrace different perspectives to solve a problem.
All engineers know this that there are hundreds of solutions and hundreds of approaches to a certain problem. When you can’t seem to reach a solution with one point of view, try perceiving the problem in another way. If you are working in a team take inputs from everyone, put different perspectives to work and solve the problem.

4.  Exercise- A must.
Along with your brain, your body needs its dosage of maintenance too. Remember without a healthy body one cannot be efficient in his/her work. Take some time out and make it a point to exercise on a daily basis.

5.  Avoid procrastination.
Avoiding procrastination is today’s world is a rather challenging thing to do. 6.  Read books.

7.  Be confident that you will make it. 
Four years of engineering is certainly not easy. Often you go through phases of self-doubt and fear and series of what-ifs about uncertainty of your future. Take a breath. Relax. Keep giving your 100% and things will work out for you just as fine. Always have confidence in yourself and your abilities to make it.

Becoming successful in any engineering field, or in life as an engineer takes a lot of hard work and determination. Be confident, set your goals and strongly work towards them, and the most important thing – never stop learning!

THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF ENGINEERING

Engineering is defined as a combination of science and art of applying skills of physics, mathematics, and technology for the betterment of mankind. Regarded as a noble profession, engineers are respected and valued all around the globe as they connect the society with science. Engineering is not only about learning the different principles, laws, and formulae but the ability to apply the factual knowledge for simpler day to day lives of humans.

An engineer must be well endowed with a trained technical mind and knowledge to gain value and demand. Technical skills and knowledge is of utmost importance and in today’s age not underestimated in the least. If you are an engineer with above par knowledge and a set of technical skills, there is no doubt you will be held in high regard.

THE TWO PATHS TO GRADUATION IN ENGINEERING

According to the present scenario, the stream of engineering is a hot favourite. There are two different ways to graduate in engineering. One is to pursue engineering after the higher secondary exams, i.e. 12th board exams.

Another way is to opt for a diploma in the preferred branch of engineering. Diploma courses are offered by polytechnic colleges in India. In this diploma course, students get three years of education in the branch of engineering they prefer. This is then followed by three years graduation course of engineering.


POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS: BETTER ENGINEERS

In the higher secondary education, students receive two years of science education, viz. physics, chemistry, and mathematics after which they are admitted into the engineering colleges where they receive four years of engineering education. In the case of polytechnics, during the course of all 6 years of diploma and engineering, students obtain theoretical knowledge as well as core technical knowledge and hands-on experience.

The subjects polytechnic students are taught are almost similar to the subjects included in the engineering curriculum but simpler. This helps in building a strong foundation of the learning process. Also, the education received by the students during their higher secondary is not very application oriented whereas, polytechnic students follow a curriculum which is application based.

It is safe to say that polytechnic students make better engineers as they obtain more practical knowledge and experience. When they set foot in the industry, complete with a technically sound mind and brain, they are priority candidates for core technical industries. Why? Because with a trained technical mind comes an ability to work more efficiently to solve problems and provide solutions at a faster speed and thus deliver better results.
