How to demonstrate your soft skills?

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

A question we’ve been asked all our lives. For some of us, the answer has evolved or changed completely over the years. For some others, the answer has been determined from the start. Either way, the one thing we all have in common is inspiration. We have all come across people who have motivated us to work towards our dream. We decided to look beyond college life and engineering and take a look at those who are making it in the real world. In this blog series, AVCOE rounds up renowned names in business who, as the youth says, started from the bottom.

This month, we shine the spotlight on Richa Kar, better known as the Founder of Zivame. She started this online women’s lingerie store as a possible solution to the lingerie shopping issue, many women feel in India, to this day. Although we have come a long way in the way we think, there is still a little prevailing taboo left to banish from our society.

By launching an online platform where women can shop for lingerie without feeling uncomfortable, Richa Kar took a step towards countering this issue. But as one can guess, her start wasn’t an easy one. Ashamed and afraid of the stigma mentioned earlier, both her parents refused to have any part in helping her launch her business. So, the engineering graduate (like many of our readers aspire to be!), took matters into her own hands and pooled in all her savings and borrowed money from friends and started Zivame. She had a strong professional background in retail after working in Spencers’ and SAP and had conducted a thorough case study of Victoria’s Secret’s online sales. She quickly realised that there wasn’t a platform like that for women in India and decided to start her own.

Today, she may have stepped down as CEO, but her company is up and running. She stays on the board of directors and her dream continues to have the potential to reach new bounds. From having to mask her profession to proudly owning it, Richa Kar has come a long way and stays on top of our inspiration list. As Steve Harvey once said, “Failure is a great teacher.” This month’s entrepreneur story teaches us a little about failure and a lot about successfully overcoming societal stigma.

Glaciers are melting!

Sound familiar? By now, we have all heard about the limited window left for us to reverse the ill-effects of climate change before it’s too late and global warming becomes irreversible. Turns out, a lot of budding inventors have begun research on developing technology that makes not only our lives easier but also keeps mother nature safe and sound. This month, AVCOE dives deep into research to find astonishing eco-friendly inventions that are being developed as we speak!

Apart from the infamous and highly anticipated hyperloop or the 3D printer, the future holds a promise of inventions that are sure to work. Just look at the recent success in technology by 18-year-old Fion Ferreria who discovered a way to extract microplastics from ocean water. Plastic, being semi or non biodegradable, simply breaks down into microscopic particles called microplastic which ends up in bloodstreams of fish, animals and humans too! Speaking of plastic, let’s look at future technology some, rather most of which include substitutes for this environmentally-harmful material, making our world a better place to live in.

Do you drink enough water? If yes, what is your approach? Do you have a collection of used plastic water bottles in your room? Or do you carry a reusable sipper/bottle everywhere you go? We sure hope its the latter! But it looks like we don’t have to worry about that any longer because the future will bring us, edible water blobs called ‘Ooho!’ A group of brilliant minds from RCA and Imperial College London discovered an edible covering made out of seaweed extract that could be used to store water. This covering, if not consumed in 4 to 6 weeks, automatically decomposes!

So once we have our hydration needs in check, we can move on to edible packaging for everything! A team of researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture are in the process of developing edible food packaging that will be made out of casein, i.e. a protein found in milk.

Why stop there? A young man still finishing schooling has invented a solution to eliminating plastic bottles for product packaging by introducing the concept of shampoo balls. It’s just as simple as it sounds and a great step in favor of our planet.

Moving away from plastic, another major pollutant of our environment are petrol and gas emissions from cars. Air pollution is extremely toxic to not only our planet but also the life on it and although we have started moving towards electric cars, we still have a long way to go.

One such invention is said to take place in Gurgaon and it is called a pod taxi. This concept would reap numerous benefits, the most obvious being it will drastically cut down air pollution as it will run electrically. It will also be driverless and reduce road traffic congestion, which is a major issue in most places in India. People will soon be able to go to and from work with ease, and get to work on time!

But that’s just Gurgaon. What about the rest of our country? And eventually, the world? If we must continue driving cars that run on gas and petrol, we could make the carbon emissions that they give off to good use instead of bad. Experts from the MIT Lab have introduced Air-ink. This simple invention uses a filter called ‘Kaalink’ which turns carbon soot into usable ink!

Someone once said something along the lines of engineers picking up God’s creations where he left off. After looking into what’s next for us, thanks to highly-skilled inventors, you’d have to agree with that saying! These are a select few of the many technological inventions that are being conceptualised in this very moment! It looks like we are striving towards a better tomorrow. Our future looks promising. Our future will be environment-friendly.

The increase in the demand for cybersecurity personnel’s coupled with high salaries and the various opportunities in different fields it brings along, it has surely become a career path to consider in today’s time. Following are a few career pathways you can pursue as cybersecurity personnel.


   1)      Security Software Developer

A security software developer is someone who develops security software as well as integrates security into software during the course of design and development. A security software developer is an individual who is responsible for analyzing software implementations and designs so as to identify and resolve any security issues that might exist. In order to make this happen, a security software developer incorporates the appropriate security analysis during each part of the software creation cycle. Their main purpose is to create and maintain the security of the organization for which they work.

   2)       Security Architect Career Path

A security architect is a senior-level employee who is responsible for designing, building and maintaining the security structures for an organization's computer system. A security architect is responsible for designing security structures to thwart malware and hacker intrusions to an organization's computer system. Once these structures are in place, the security architect will test for any weaknesses and audit the entire system. To fully test the system, an outside ethical hacker may need to be brought in to run a thorough penetration test in order to ensure that the system is secure from outside attacks.

   3)      Security Consultant

The role of the cybersecurity or IT security consultant is very crucial to every organization, whether government or private, for helping to prevent these security threats.IT security consultants assess software, computer systems, and networks for vulnerabilities, then design and implement the best security solutions for an organization’s needs. They play the role of both the attacker and the victim and are asked to locate and potentially exploit vulnerabilities. Some IT security consultants are former hackers who have decided to enter the profession after seeing first-hand how vulnerable companies are to security threats.

   4)      Ethical Hackers

The purpose of ethical hacking is to look at the security of a system or network's infrastructure. An ethical hacker will attempt to bypass system security, and find and expose any weak points that could be taken advantage of by a malicious hacker. Vulnerabilities are typically found in improper system configuration and in hardware or software flaws.

An ethical hacker is required to research, document and discuss their methods and security findings with management and IT teams. This intelligence is then used by businesses and organizations to improve their system security so as to minimize or eliminate any potential attacks. Ethical hackers will also provide feedback and verification as an organization fixes security issues.

   5)      Penetration Tester

Penetration testing is the proactive authorized employment of testing procedures on the IT system to identify system flaws. A penetration tester usually attempts to (with permission) hack into a computer and network systems to pre-emptively discover operating system vulnerabilities, service and application problems, improper configurations and more before an intruder cause real damage. Penetration testers must be highly skilled, often using testing tools of their own design, to “break into” the systems under watch. Penetration testers are required to keep accurate records of their activities and discovered vulnerabilities.

   6)      Computer forensic analysts

The field of computer forensics is information security branch of law enforcement and is closely related to forensic science and criminal justice work; therefore, most computer forensic analysts work for law enforcement agencies. The role of the analyst is to recover data like documents, photos, and e-mails from computer hard drives and other data storage devices, such as zip and flash drives, that have been deleted, damaged or otherwise manipulated. Analysts often work on cases involving offenses committed on the Internet ('cybercrime') and examine computers that may have been involved in other types of crime in order to find evidence of illegal activity. As an information security professional, a computer forensic analyst may also use their expertise in a corporate setting to protect computers from infiltration, determine how a computer was broken into or recover lost files.
The field of cybersecurity has a lot of career choices to choose from, however its necessary that you first find out which field interests you the most. A rewarding and exciting industry, excellent career progression, rising salaries, and continued growth are only some of the many benefits that a career in cybersecurity has to offer. If there ever was a time to enter the cyber security field, it’s now.

A chair displayed in such a room would be good enough to sit in. Handcuffs displayed in such a room would be confining, and a bullet displayed in such a room would be fatal.”

We may haven’t come anywhere near Ivan Sutherland’s vision yet, and perhaps we don’t want to. But therecertainly are engaging virtual and augmented realities today.

VR makes it possible for users to immerse themselves in constructed surroundings that depict the actual places or imaginary worlds. AR overlays contextual information on the immediate physical environment users see before their eyes, thus blending digital components and experiences with real life.

What are benefits for us?

  1. Computer vision allows devices to extract information from real time images and the surrounding area. This, linked with GPS systems can help a device recognize your location, giving traffic directions, alternative routes, and even identifying hazards. It could even tell your car to activate the brakes, if it recognizes a motorbike indicator or a hand signal from a cyclist that you missed.
  2. Designing for AR and VR requires new enabling tools and services. High-definition 3D image capture and mapping equipment are emerging, accelerating developer’s abilities to recreate real world physical environments within new AR and VR tools. 
  3. Consumer-tech aside, within engineering, design and architectural companies, the power of these smart glasses is virtually endless. Through the use of digital eyeware, a wealth of information can be stored and linked to physical products in the building. When you look at a water pump, for example, the last service information and audit could pop up over the product, which can then be linked to the service manual and even a step-by-step guide to show how to dismantle and repair the elements.

So, what does the future hold for AR and VR in Engineering?

AR can allow an engineer or designer to design a product right in the environment it will go in, allowing them to be aware of space restrictions or other obstacles.

Ability to visualize a design that originates on the computer screen, as it is meant to appear in the real world, visual recognition and monitoring of various components, bug identification through comparison with known-working systems are just some of the way in which AR and VR could be useful. Could being the operative word, as is often the case with pushing the envelope of innovation, the true benefits are often not realized until the adoption curve has matured.

The Engineering Community across India celebrates Engineer’s Day on 15 September every year as a tribute to the greatest Engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli near Chikkaballapur. He went on to become India’s most prolific civil engineer, dam builder, economist, stateman, and can be counted among the last century’s foremost nation-builders.

At AVCOE, we celebrate Engineer’s Day as an appreciation of the engineering profession and in the memory of India’s eminent engineer, scholar and stateman Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

1. Field visits to historic engineering marvels
We have a great architectural and engineering heritage. There are quite a few expertly engineered monuments or buildings in India. This engineer’s day, you can take a trip to some of these design marvels. Some of the spectacular projects are Golden Globe in Auroville, Bandra-Worli Sea link, I-flex Solutions in Bangalore.

2. Organize a debate or quiz related to latest developments in engineering field
Boost your knowledge about the developments in technology and engineering field. Arrange a quiz on topics related to the same, or you can even conduct a debate on pros and cons of developing technology, or similar topics. 

3. Educate others
This Engineer’s Day, unite for a social cause. Visit a government or tribal schools and teach the kids there, simple yet interesting engineering concepts. You can also carry some interesting projects and demonstrate the working of the project to the kids.

4. Organize paper presentation or conferences in college
Communication and writing skills are important for an engineer, along with technical knowledge. Paper presentation competition enables students to carry out extensive research, analyze documents and write their own papers. Also presenting the paper involves seminar and communication with an audience. This boosts their communication skills as well as confidence. 

5. Conduct an Alumni Meet
An Alumni meet will facilitate exchange if ideas and advices between the current and the previous batch. It will bring back college memories for the pass-out students, and will be a mentoring session for the current students at the same time. and of course, a fun-filled afternoon with time well spent.

1.  Cherish learning in success or failure.
Failures are not a surprise for engineers. What makes you stand out from others is the way you deal with it. Successful engineers see failure as an opportunity to try something new, to perform better.

2.  Don’t compare yourself to others.
Be your best at what you do and keep consistently being the best. The only one you should compare yourself is to who you are today and how can you better yourself for the future.

3.  Embrace different perspectives to solve a problem.
All engineers know this that there are hundreds of solutions and hundreds of approaches to a certain problem. When you can’t seem to reach a solution with one point of view, try perceiving the problem in another way. If you are working in a team take inputs from everyone, put different perspectives to work and solve the problem.

4.  Exercise- A must.
Along with your brain, your body needs its dosage of maintenance too. Remember without a healthy body one cannot be efficient in his/her work. Take some time out and make it a point to exercise on a daily basis.

5.  Avoid procrastination.
Avoiding procrastination is today’s world is a rather challenging thing to do. With social media becoming an ‘important’ part and parcel of our lives, it is convenient enough to put off our work to next day, and the next and it goes on. Agreed we need our share social lives but don’t waste most of your time browsing such apps. Prioritize your work which will give you time for work, study as well as fun.

6.  Read books.
Reading books allows you to learn new information you can relate or connect with your current skills and solve problems more efficiently than someone who is not reading books at all. Be it fiction or non-fiction, the former broadens your imagination and the latter gives you access to facts and mantras regarding your field.

7.  Be confident that you will make it. 
Four years of engineering is certainly not easy. Often you go through phases of self-doubt and fear and series of what-ifs about uncertainty of your future. Take a breath. Relax. Keep giving your 100% and things will work out for you just as fine. Always have confidence in yourself and your abilities to make it.

Becoming successful in any engineering field, or in life as an engineer takes a lot of hard work and determination. Be confident, set your goals and strongly work towards them, and the most important thing – never stop learning!
