In this blog, we look at the entrepreneurial journey of the founder of Baggit, Nina Lekhi and how one of the failures of her life ushered the start of an international brand.

Nina was a born creative and had a passion for painting. At 18 years old, she faced one of her life’s most harsh failures when she failed the first year of an art diploma she had been pursuing. She showed immense grace in bouncing back from this setback which is minting her millions, today!

Nina had a diverse handbag collection, each bag for a different purpose. Taking inspiration from her own closet, she began designing a variety of handbags herself. She noticed that at the time, the market lacked ‘classy’ and ‘elegant’ bags and took it upon herself to meet this need. Thus, her ‘Bags with Attitude’ were born. With a startup capital of INR 7000 that her mother invested in her dream, she slowly, but surely began taking over the fashion world. Her handbags were designed to not only be of good quality but also of enough capacity for maximum storage of items. She also designed her bags according to international standards and sold them at a reasonable price.

Nina began marketing her product at exhibitions in hotels such as Oberoi Mall. She also sold a lot of bags during her time as a salesgirl at a fashion boutique where she stocked her handbags. She hit the jackpot when Shoppers Stop launched in the market and collaborated with her brand. Today, her business is worth around 1000 crores with over a thousand stores globally.

Corporate Social Skills
Patience and diplomacy are your keys to a healthy attitude and unproblematic presence at work. Apart from maintaining regular social niceties, it is important to accept that you will come across people of varying competencies, personalities and mannerisms. Some of which, you may personally find displeasing. In these cases, you have to train yourself to maintain professional etiquette and deal with the person’s behaviour with a pinch of salt. It is essential to understand the difference between being firm on your point and being rude or dismissive of somebody else’s point. It is important to learn to curb egos without bruising them. In a workplace, when it comes to opinion, learn to be diplomatic. Acknowledge and validate opinions, even when you disagree with them, before putting your take on the matter forward. For instance, the phrase, “That’s a great idea! We could also try…” is a great way of acknowledging both yours and others opinion.

Strong Presence vs. Loud Presence
Unknowingly, your personality may rub others the wrong way. Always remember to tone it down when interacting with your colleagues and maintain a neutral persona. Loud, attention-seeking personalities are often disliked and considered disruptive in an office environment. Focus on developing a strong presence instead. One that is heard and respected. This is where you let your work and technical knowledge speak for you. Having a strong opinion backed up with facts triumphs having a loud voice, anyday. Try taking up responsibilities outside of your job description if it fits your schedule. This way you help your company grow while tending to your personal growth and become an asset to your firm.

Think Before You Discuss
At work, it is essential to be friendly but rare to make real friends. We live in a competitive world which may intensify in corporations. You never know people’s true intentions. Make sure you balance your personality and professionalism effectively. Be cautious about what and how much you share with your colleagues as the information may be circulated. Everyone needs somebody to talk to. Work can get lonely without a buddy. Make a conscious effort to share solutions as opposed to problems. If there’s something you need to vent about, share its possible solution or positive outcome rather than choosing to complain or whine about the situation. This promotes a healthy attitude towards your work, coworkers and obstacles if they arise.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

A question we’ve been asked all our lives. For some of us, the answer has evolved or changed completely over the years. For some others, the answer has been determined from the start. Either way, the one thing we all have in common is inspiration. We have all come across people who have motivated us to work towards our dream. We decided to look beyond college life and engineering and take a look at those who are making it in the real world. In this blog series, AVCOE rounds up renowned names in business who, as the youth says, started from the bottom.

This month, we shine the spotlight on Richa Kar, better known as the Founder of Zivame. She started this online women’s lingerie store as a possible solution to the lingerie shopping issue, many women feel in India, to this day. Although we have come a long way in the way we think, there is still a little prevailing taboo left to banish from our society.

By launching an online platform where women can shop for lingerie without feeling uncomfortable, Richa Kar took a step towards countering this issue. But as one can guess, her start wasn’t an easy one. Ashamed and afraid of the stigma mentioned earlier, both her parents refused to have any part in helping her launch her business. So, the engineering graduate (like many of our readers aspire to be!), took matters into her own hands and pooled in all her savings and borrowed money from friends and started Zivame. She had a strong professional background in retail after working in Spencers’ and SAP and had conducted a thorough case study of Victoria’s Secret’s online sales. She quickly realised that there wasn’t a platform like that for women in India and decided to start her own.

Today, she may have stepped down as CEO, but her company is up and running. She stays on the board of directors and her dream continues to have the potential to reach new bounds. From having to mask her profession to proudly owning it, Richa Kar has come a long way and stays on top of our inspiration list. As Steve Harvey once said, “Failure is a great teacher.” This month’s entrepreneur story teaches us a little about failure and a lot about successfully overcoming societal stigma.

College can be a huge change for most students. Moving from the safety of your home and the school you attended for a long time to living in a hostel with roommates and embarking on a new educational system.

Here are five tips that can make your transition easier and start your college experience on the right foot.

Balance is key.

Starting college exposes you to a bigger world than you are usually used to. Students look forward to new experiences and meeting new people. But it’s hard to balance academics, health and a social life successfully, especially in the first few months of a big change. But it is helpful to set a daily schedule from the first day of college to ensure that you have a healthy balance between work and play.

College activities are just as essential as college classes.

For some of us, the new style of education and the overwhelming amount of syllabus can be challenging and often be hard to cope with. Students tend to forget about extra-curricular activities to focus solely on classes and tests. Try taking the first month to settle in and understand your academic requirements. Once you have done that and set a timetable to cope with the syllabus, join a club! Explore your campus and check out the various clubs, workshops, and events it offers. Make sure you actively partake in them. This is a great way to make new friends and pursue your hobbies along with your education. Attendance is more important than you think.

You may have been told that you need to attend all your classes more times than you would like to hear. As cliche as it sounds, it really is an essential step towards understanding your courses better. A percentage of your attendance being mandatory gives you the liberty to skip one or two classes if you want to. Unless you have an emergency you need to attend to, it is not advisable to skip your classes. Active learning does 40-50% of studying for you. The independent learning you do after that acts as a revision of what you already know. Merely sitting in class and listening to your professor is more beneficial than you would think. Even if you zone out, you will still unknowingly absorb the learning material.

Know your professors.

Introduce yourself to your professors on the first day of class. Build a rapport with them from the start and always ask for help. Remember! No question is too silly to ask. Do not hesitate to ask for assistance no matter how small your doubt may be. In fact, the more questions you ask, the happier your professors will be, as it shows that you are interested to learn the subject they teach.

Do not tolerate any harassment.

There is no such thing as ‘overreacting’ when it comes to harassment. Trust your instincts when it comes to new people and uncomfortable situations. If someone or something makes you feel unsafe in the slightest, do not hesitate to report it to authorities. Any problem or unsafe situation is never too small to report. AVCOE has a zero-tolerance policy for any kind of harassment. Students are encouraged to make use of their protection programs as and when they need to.

Group Discussions or GD are mandatorily conducted by many colleges, institutions, and companies in their selection process. Usually conducted after an aptitude test and followed by a personal interview, GDs are performed to check on your soft skills and knowledge.

While most GDs are fairly easy to crack, many candidates face problems because they are either not confident enough, do not have adequate knowledge on the subject or lack command over the language. However, there are ways in which one can master the group discussion game.

Stay updated

Group discussions are generally held on the current trending topics. Read newspapers regularly and try knowing at least a little something about everything. See to that that you have adequate General Knowledge about historical events and basic geography.

Understand the topic

After you are given a topic, make sure that you understand the point of it well. If you have any doubts, make sure that you get them rectified. Clarity of the topic is of utmost importance in a GD.

Clear thoughts

Always concentrate on the quality and not on the quantity. You must have a clear and concise message every time you speak. Always concentrate on ‘what’ rather than ‘how much’.

Communication

Group Discussions are conducted to check on your soft skills. If you are not able to put forth your views clearly or are not able to communicate properly with other candidates, you will definitely be marked negatively. Make sure that you work on your leadership skills, social skills, team skills, problem-solving skills and presence of mind before going to a GD. Try being the one who starts and concludes the discussion. Make sure you introduce yourself before starting. Add to other’s points, but never interrupt. Also, listen carefully to what other candidates are saying. Don’t be aggressive or be deterred by somebody else’s submissive behavior. Be humble, acceptive and encourage other candidates to speak.

While some view it as laziness, there might be other factors at play. In psychology, it has been long been believed that people who procrastinate have a faulty sense of time, that they think they will have more time to get something done than they actually do. Specifically, it seems that task aversion is to blame i.e. when people view a task in an unpleasant manner (tough, boring, or painful), they are more likely to put it off.
Sometimes people procrastinate because other options for how to spend their time are too tempting to pass up, or they think they can work better under pressure. People convince themselves that they’re waiting until crunch time because the product will be better. Other times, they procrastinate because they don’t know how to begin.



If you are struggling with putting things off, try these tips which might help get you on track: 

1. Put it in writing

Write down the tasks you’ve been avoiding. This will bring the project to the front of your mind so you can’t easily ignore it.

2. Neutralize negative thinking

When you think of this task, what negative thought pops into your head? Find an antidote to that thought in the form of a truth that contradicts it. Instead of thinking “I’ll never be able to learn all this,” you might say to yourself, “I can do this”.

3. Break it into parts

When a task seems overbearing, procrastination often follows. So how can you break that task into smaller, more manageable parts? Chunking it down will help you feel less overwhelmed and more empowered.

4. Stop giving excuses

Do any of these sound familiar? “I need to be in the mood.”, “I will wait until I have time.”, “I work better under pressure.” Be honest with yourself, these are excuses which will never allow you to start your work. Stop giving them and start working

5. Enjoy the victory

Finishing a daunting task is satisfying. Remind yourself that you’ll feel incredibly virtuous when the chore is off your plate once and for all. Accomplishing what you’re avoiding will simplify your work life. You’ll feel more energetic. You’ll sleep better at night. Relish the feeling of success.

Along with your brain, your body needs its dosage of maintenance too. Remember without a healthy body one cannot be efficient in his/her work. Take some time out and make it a point to exercise on a daily basis.

5.  Avoid procrastination.
Avoiding procrastination is today’s world is a rather challenging thing to do. With social media becoming an ‘important’ part and parcel of our lives, it is convenient enough to put off our work to next day, and the next and it goes on. Agreed we need our share social lives but don’t waste most of your time browsing such apps. Prioritize your work which will give you time for work, study as well as fun.

6.  Read books.
Reading books allows you to learn new information you can relate or connect with your current skills and solve problems more efficiently than someone who is not reading books at all. Be it fiction or non-fiction, the former broadens your imagination and the latter gives you access to facts and mantras regarding your field.

7.  Be confident that you will make it. 
Four years of engineering is certainly not easy. Often you go through phases of self-doubt and fear and series of what-ifs about uncertainty of your future. Take a breath. Relax. Keep giving your 100% and things will work out for you just as fine. Always have confidence in yourself and your abilities to make it.

Becoming successful in any engineering field, or in life as an engineer takes a lot of hard work and determination. Be confident, set your goals and strongly work towards them, and the most important thing – never stop learning!
